Gov. Greg Abbott Pledges To Sign Law Allowing Texas Police To Arrest Illegal Immigrants

Texas Governor Greg Abbott recently promised his intention to sign into effect a new state law that would provide every police officer in the state the authority to arrest immigrants who have illegally entered the United States. The potential initiative reflects a variety of other actions Gov. Abbott has taken regarding the southern border in recent years as illegal immigration has spiked under the Biden administration.

“Texas is having to step up and do even more to make sure that we deny illegal entry into the state of Texas and as a result … in two weeks I’ll be singing [the] new law,” Abbott pledged. Texas Republican lawmakers recently sent Gov. Abbott SB4. This legislation would allow local police to handle immigration issues as it would be considered a state misdemeanor to cross the border with Mexico illegally.

If Abbott signs the bill into law, the legislation would also allow judges to send illegal immigrants back to Mexico. Some have praised the law as “the strongest border security bill.” Abbott outlined just how bad illegal immigration is becoming in the Lone Star state.

The Texas governor also claimed Joe Biden’s incompetence with managing the southern border as a critical driver of the heightened number of illegal border crossings. “The problem is extraordinarily bad,” Gov. Abbott stated. “The numbers are high, and that is because Joe Biden continues to lay out the welcome mat welcoming illegal immigrants into the United States of America.”

Abbott further explained that he and his state are having to take matters into his own hands amid the Biden administration’s inability to prevent illegal immigration. “That’s why Texas is having to step up and apprehend as many of these people as possible to make sure that they’re not posing a threat to our country, but this is a very serious existential threat to our country caused by Joe Biden,” Abbott said. “And that’s exactly why Texas is taking extraordinary steps to try to crack down on it.”

The American Tribune recently reported on another border initiative spearheaded by Gov. Abbott, the bussing of migrants to Democrat-run sanctuary cities. According to Abbott, Operation Lone Star has removed 70,000 migrants from Texas and sent them to blue cities such as Chicago and New York, both of which are experiencing significant strains to their infrastructure amid the influx.

The governor highlighted the extent to which his state was distributing migrants to cities all around the country, stating, “Texas will bus migrants to sanctuary cities until Biden secures the border. Over 12,500 to DC, Over 25,000 to New York City, Over 20,000 to Chicago, Over 3,200 to Philadelphia, Over 7,400 to Denver, Over 1,100 to Los Angeles. Our mission provides vital relief to border towns.”

According to a statement from Gov. Abbott’s office, “Since the launch of Operation Lone Star, the multi-agency effort has led to over 485,700 illegal immigrant apprehensions and more than 36,800 criminal arrests, with more than 33,400 felony charges reported. In the fight against the fentanyl crisis, Texas law enforcement has seized over 449 million lethal doses of fentanyl during this border mission.”
