Julia felt like her world fell apart when her husband Tom was diagnosed with cancer. Unfortunately, the doctors gave little hope, and he passed away just two months later. After she remarried, her son went missing.

Her heart hurt, but she knew she had to stay strong for her young son Rob, who was still deeply affected by his father’s death.

As months went by, the sadness grew, but then Tom’s brother, Mike, became a part of Julia and Rob’s lives. Julia knew that Mike had always liked her, but she had chosen Tom and never looked back.

As time went on, Mike’s presence in their lives started to feel comforting, so Julia decided to marry him and provide her son with a father figure.

Mike and Rob grew closer over time. After all, Mike was Rob’s uncle, and now he was also his mother’s husband.

Julia worked a lot, and when she came home, Mike would tell her about the fun day he and Rob had, whether they were hiking, visiting the park, or doing other activities together.

But one day, when Julia returned home, she was met with an unusual silence. She began to worry if everything was okay, when Mike came up to her, hugged her, and told her that her son had disappeared.

In the letter he left for his parents, 15-year-old Rob wrote:

Dear Mom and Dad,

I’ve decided to leave because I thought it would be better for everyone if I wasn’t here to bring up more sad memories. Please know this isn’t because of anything you did, but because I felt it was the best choice for peace at home. I promise to take care of myself and hope you can forgive me one day. I love you both, and this is the hardest decision I’ve ever made.

Julia couldn’t believe that Rob would make such a choice. Worried for her son’s safety, she went to the police. However, since he left a letter explaining his decision, there wasn’t much they could do.

They did try to help her search, but eventually, they gave up, saying he clearly didn’t want to be found.

Years went by since Rob disappeared, but Julia never stopped looking for him. She searched through crowds, held vigils, and even kept a candle burning in the window. Mike didn’t like this and urged her to stop searching, believing Rob didn’t want to be found. After ten years of searching, Julia decided it was time to let go and move on with her life.

Julia needed a fresh start, so she and Mike moved to a house in another state. She gave their old house to her sister Schuyler because she couldn’t bear the thought of someone outside the family owning it. As time passed, Julia slowly distanced herself from her side of the family. But one day, Schuyler showed up at her door.

Schuyler seemed nervous and told Julia they needed to talk. Julia was busy at the time, but Schuyler insisted she stop what she was doing. “Go check your husband’s glasses case,” she said, her voice shaking.

Julia did as she was told, and when she opened the case, she found a phone. Schuyler explained that it was a burner phone Mike used to call Rob every month, just to make sure he wasn’t planning to come home. Julia’s son had disappeared because of her husband.

It was Mike who convinced Rob that his mom would be better off without him and sent him to live with an aunt from his father’s side. Schuyler discovered this when she received a wedding invitation addressed to Julia. Rob was getting married, and despite Mike telling him his mom didn’t want him, Rob still wanted her there for his wedding.

Schuyler managed to contact Rob using the wedding invitation’s address, and that’s when she found out that Mike had been secretly in touch with Rob for over ten years without Julia knowing.

“Look at how much mom has to work to take care of you,” Mike would tell Rob. “Wouldn’t it be better if she spent that money on herself? Don’t you want to take the burden off her?” He suggested that Rob leave the house, and the poor boy agreed, believing his mom didn’t have space for him in her life.

Julia found the burner phone and reached out to Rob. She told him that she had no idea what Mike had done and that she had never stopped looking for him.

Eventually, Julia divorced Mike, sold the house they had bought together, and moved into a home next to Rob’s. She attended his wedding and is now a grandmother to a beautiful boy.
