“He Did Everything For Her”: Dad Dies Rescuing 2-Year-Old Daughter From Car

Alonso Garcia was walking with his 2-year-old daughter, Lizbeth Garcia, when a car came hurtling toward the father and daughter duo. Acting quickly to save her, Garcia managed to get her stroller out of the way of the oncoming car, but died doing so.

He leaves behind him his daughter, who fortunately survived the incident, and his girlfriend Subrina, and his family is now asking for help in dealing with the situation, as the cost of the funeral is quite large and, given that Garcia was just 36 when he died, was not prepared for a funeral or to survive without a breadwinner.

Speaking to Fox affiliate KDVR, Garcia’s sister, Karla Alanis, said, “Alonso took his daughter out to get something to eat, and they were on foot. He took her in a stroller. They were walking across the crosswalk when a car came [at them] head-on.” Continuing, Alanis added that “He loved her very much. He did everything for her.”

Alanis then went on to say, NBC affiliate KUSA reports, that Garcia saw the oncoming car and pushed the stroller in which his daughter was sitting out of the way, but was not able to get out of the way himself and so he was struck by the car. After the accident, he was taken to the hospital with broken ribs and a torn ACL, and eventually died of his injuries.

Alanis, commenting on his death, said that he was awaiting the surgery at home but didn’t survive until surgery, saying, “After his injuries, he was told to await surgery at home. Surgery was scheduled for two days afterwards, but he didn’t get to make it to the surgery.”

She also noted that he was incredibly close with his daughter because of his tragic situation growing up, saying, “My brother, he didn’t have a father. So, when he had his daughter, he promised her that he was always going to be there for her and be a better dad.”

The GoFundMe created to help provide Garcia’s family, the driver who killed Garcia got off with a slap on the wrist. “According to Denver Police, the driver is uninsured and was only given a citation,” the GoFundMe says. It also describes Garcia’s injuries and tragic passing in more detail, noting, “Alonso was rushed to the hospital to treat multiple injuries including fractured ankle, broken elbow, torn ACL and broken ribs. He was released from the hospital a day and half later. While at home, Alonso, stopped breathing. Family started CPR and called for an ambulance to assess the gravity of the situation. Paramedics arrived on scene, they performed life-saving measure for 45 minutes. Alonso would ultimately succumb to injuries and died.”

Continuing, the fundraiser went on to describe why the family is asking for help and on what the money will be spent, saying, “We are all devastated by Alonso’s loss and were not prepared for the high cost of a funeral service. We want to give Alonso the memorial he deserves, to honor his memory and say our last goodbyes.”
