Mets Honor Fallen NYPD Officer Jonathan Diller During Opening Day

Recently, the New York Mets honored NYPD officer Jonathan Diller, who was tragically killed in the line of duty during a routine traffic stop gone wrong. The Mets held a moment of silence for Diller before their home opener against the Milwaukee Brewers on Friday.

As players from both teams lined up on their respective baselines, a tribute to Diller was displayed on the Jumbotron, reading “In Memoriam Jonathan Diller 1999-2024.” The New York City Police Department acknowledged the gesture, thanking the Mets for the considerate action.

“We extend our gratitude to the Mets for their tribute & support for our fallen officer, Jonathan Diller & his family, at today’s OpeningDay ceremony at CitiField,” the New York City Police Department wrote in a message shared to X. “As New York City continues to honor our hero, we wish the Mets a great 2024 season.”

Alleged gunman 34-year-old Guy Rivera fatally shot Diller during a routine stop in Queens as the officer approached a vehicle for a traffic violation. Reportedly, Rivera allegedly fired at Diller as he was attempting to get him to exit the car. The bullet struck Diller in the abdomen below his bulletproof vest, where he died of his wounds.

Reports indicate that Rivera has a lengthy criminal history with 21 prior arrests. Another individual was arrested, Lindy Jones, who was also in the vehicle at the time of the shooting. He was arrested for criminal possession of a weapon and defacing a weapon.

Many have spoken out about Diller’s death, blaming progressive soft-on-crime policies and initiatives to defund the police for the seeming rise in lawlessness throughout urban America, where criminals, such as Rivera, roam the streets.

For example, former President Donald Trump attended Diller’s recent wake, where he honored the fallen officer and personally met with his family. The standout NYPD officer leaves behind a widowed wife and a 1-year-old son. “What happened is such a sad, sad event. Such a horrible thing, and it’s happening all too often and we’re just not going to let it happen, we just can’t,” Trump said at the wake.

Trump emphasized the need to restore “law and order,” stressing that the current status quo simply is not working. The GOP frontrunner further stated that too many instances similar to what claimed Diller’s life are occurring.

He continued, “But the Diller family will, you’ll never be the same, you can never be the same, but we have to stop it, we have to stop it. We have to get back to law and order. We have to do a lot of things differently because this is not working. This is happening too often.”

While nothing can bring back the heroic police officer, Trump noted that something must be done to strive toward a society where such criminal activity does not claim innocent lives. “This is such a sad occasion. The only thing we can say is maybe something is going to be learned. We’ve got to strengthen it up, we’ve got to toughen it up.”
